GH participates in the DecarbEurope 2017 Report: Engaging with technology

This report, supported by the European Commission’s for Action on Climate and Energy, has been initiated by the European Copper Institute with the support of 10 industry associations. The goal is to engage decision makers in policy and industry with cost-effective technical solutions that each reduce European GHG emissions by 100 to 500 million tons per year.

The report is an answer to a growing need to make technology clearly intelligible to decision makers. For each technology, a revealing infographic introduces the reader to its features and benefits. The vast economic and environmental potential – and how to unlock it – becomes immediately clear with the 10 remarkable facts and 5 concrete policy recommendations.

 

The report also presents 30 convincing case studies from all over Europe, one of which is a fully operational project carried out by GH induction for a major ceramic company: rubber removal from tile punches.

GH joins Park-Ohio Holdings

In January 2017, an important milestone was reached: GH joined one of the world’s biggest industrial and technology groups, Park Ohio Holdings (NASDAQ: PKOH). ParkOhio is a U.S. company that brings together leading businesses in engineered products, supply technologies and assembly components. Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, the company operates 45 manufacturing sites and 54 supply chain logistics facilities.

With the sale of shares owned by Miura Private Equity, GH now has a partner that is 100% focused on technology and strategy, facilitating the consolidation of GH’s international leadership in induction technology.

The opportunities for complementarity and synergy are enormous, given that ParkOhio is diversified, yet remains focused on the industrial and technological sector, with outsourcing services in supply chain management, capital goods for production lines, and manufactured components for product assembly.

With the acquisition of GH -in their Engineer Products Segment with Ajax Tocco- ParkOhio has become one of the world’s most important induction groups. Staying up to date on generators is crucial

Induction heating requires the generation of an alternating current of a specified frequency and strength. Induction power sources make certain processes viable, maximizing the advantages of their use.

Their evolution is tied to the evolution of power electronics in general.

SiC. The best option for high frequencies
The addition of silicon carbide (SiC) for use at high frequencies is a significant advance. In some MOSFET transistors, this compound is replacing silicon as the native material. Silicon carbide is also used in other industries, such as traction motors, electric vehicles, solar power, etc.

The compound’s operating range is between 20 kHz and 400 kHz, but high frequencies are where its efficiency is most notable.

Without the development of power supplies, technological evolution in induction and its transfer to the whole industry is impossible.
Real-life examples of SiC’s many advantages:

Tube welding

Challenge: Complex generators with a large number of semiconductors in a factory with very little space, poor accessibility, and a harsh environment.

Solution: A highly compact induction welding unit with a drastically reduced number of transistors that is very low maintenance.

Benefits: A 55% reduction in the amount of necessary space.

Screwdriver heat treatment

Challenge:
To perform with one coil two functions: hardening and tempering in order to simplify the system and become an affordable investment by the customer.

Solution: SiC generator allows to feed both functions into the single coil with a simple frequency programming and without any mechanical switch.

Benefits: Complete treatment in a very compact and simplified machine that is cost effective.

INCREDIBLE PROCESS CONTROL

Challenge:

Uniform heating of large-diameter rings (up to 2.5 meters) is required in order to braze them to the rotor’s copper bars.

Solution:

A 600kw heating unit that provides precise process control for brazing the ring to the bars, but also allows the operator to intervene at any time -if necessary- using a control panel.

Benefits:

High-quality brazing of the rotor bars to the ring, and an excellent finish. Prevents overheating and preserves the ferrites that give the finished product an attractive appearance, eliminating the need for further operations. Eliminates the need for flame torches.

Consolidation in the Asian automotive market

Although we already have a presence in Asia, particularly in India, in February we received a significant order for hub and spindle hardening and tempering machines from Asia’s biggest manufacturer, who is pursuing a global market share of 40% by 2020. Our customer has 22 factories in Korea, China, India, Slovakia, and the U.S.

With this order, GH becomes the customer’s principal induction supplier thanks to the high quality and efficiency of our machines, and the technological innovations that distinguish us from our competition.

Renault trusts GH 3D printed inductors

Renault Valladolid, the principal production plant for the group’s engine crankshafts, will be installing 3D printed inductors manufactured by GH on a new hardening line.

After solving a problem on one of its oldest lines by replacing traditional copper coils in the crankshaft inductors, the company has put its complete confidence in GH for this critical manufacturing process.
